Kasbah Agadir Oufella

Agadir Oufella is the old fortress on the hill above the port, built in 1540. Most of it was destroyed in the 1960 earthquake, but the restored walls and the view over the bay make it the city’s best-known landmark.

On the hillside below the walls, the words “God, Country, King” are written in Arabic in huge white letters, and lit up at night. You can see them from almost anywhere along the bay.

From the top you get a view of the whole bay: the port and marina below, the long beach to the south and, on a clear day, the Atlas foothills inland. It is a reminder of how the old town looked before the earthquake of 29 February 1960, which destroyed much of Agadir.

The hill is exposed to the wind and can feel several degrees cooler than the beach. Late afternoon is the best time to visit, when the light is soft and the bay turns gold. A cable car runs up from the foot of the hill, or you can go by taxi.
