Taghazout
Taghazout is a former fishing village 19 km north of Agadir and the centre of Moroccan surfing. Within a few kilometres of the village there are more than a dozen breaks, from beginner beaches to some of the best right-hand points in Africa.
The village itself is a tangle of painted houses on a slope above the beach, full of surf camps, yoga roof terraces and small cafés. Just south, the newer Taghazout Bay resort has hotels, a golf course and a long promenade.
The famous waves are Anchor Point, a long right-hand point that wakes up with a solid winter swell, and Killer Point, further north and more exposed. Closer to the village, Hash Point and Panoramas are friendlier. Beginners learn at Panoramas and at the beach breaks towards Tamraght.
Most of the year the weather is mild and sunny. The main thing that changes is the ocean. From October to April, North Atlantic storms send long-period swell down the coast and the points start to work. In summer the swell drops, the water warms up and the afternoon wind from the north is stronger.
Like the rest of the coast, Taghazout often wakes up under low cloud in early summer. It usually clears before lunch.
