What the weather is like

January is Agadir’s coolest month, but “cool” here means around 20°C in the afternoon with plenty of sun. Nights are a different story: temperatures drop to about 8°C, and older houses and riads are not always heated, so evenings feel chilly.

It is also one of the wettest months, though that is relative: about four days of rain on average, often in short bursts. Most days are bright and dry.

The ocean is at its most powerful. Big North Atlantic swells make January a top month for experienced surfers in Taghazout and Imsouane, and the sea is cool at around 17–18°C.

What to pack

Light layers for the day, a warm jumper or fleece and a light jacket for the evening. A 4/3 wetsuit if you surf. Sun cream: the sun is still strong at midday.

What to do

Surf the point breaks north of Agadir, walk the beach promenade in the afternoon sun, visit Souk El Had, and go birdwatching in Souss-Massa while migrants are around.

Local tips

Book a room with heating or air conditioning that can run warm. Plan outdoor time between 11 am and 5 pm, when it is warmest.
