Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley is a palm-filled gorge in the foothills of the High Atlas, about 40 km northeast of Agadir. A river runs through it and forms clear green pools between the rocks, which is what most people come for.

The valley follows the Tamraght river through the Ida Outanane hills. From the car park, a short walk of 20 to 30 minutes leads down to the main pools. Some are deep enough to swim in, and there are rocks to jump from for the brave.

Being inland and higher up, it feels different from the coast. Days are often warmer and drier than in Agadir, and there is no sea breeze to cool things down. Nights and early mornings are noticeably cooler, especially in winter.

The pools depend on rain. After a wet winter the river flows well and the water is clear. After a long dry spell the pools shrink and can turn still. Late winter and spring usually give the best mix of water and comfortable heat.

Do not go after heavy rain. The gorge is narrow and the river can rise quickly. If there has been a storm in the mountains in the last day or two, pick another trip.

When should I avoid Paradise Valley?

Within a day or two of heavy rain, when the river can rise quickly in the narrow gorge.
